Please begin this assignment by creating a Google account; regardless of which blogging platform you choose, having a Google account will make it much easier to leave comments at people\u2019s Blogger blogs. A Google account will also be very useful if you decide later in the semester to build a website with the Google Sites website tool.<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><strong>Step 1: Google account<\/strong>. It\u2019s easy to create an account:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/accounts.google.com\/SignUp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-fontsize=\"14\">Create your Google Account<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0If you already have a Google account (for example, if you already use Gmail), move on to Step 2.<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><strong>Step 2. Google account security<\/strong>. I would recommend that you check your Google account security to make sure you have set up an account recovery procedure along with any other privacy settings you want to adjust. Here is the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/security?pli=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-fontsize=\"14\">Google Security Checklist<\/a><\/strong>. Create a new Blogger blog<\/strong>. To create your new blog, go to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogger.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-fontsize=\"14\">Blogger.com<\/a><\/strong>, log in with your Google account (if you are not logged in already). Click the\u00a0<strong>New Blog button<\/strong>\u00a0that you see on the right-hand side of the Blogger home screen. You will then need to give your blog a\u00a0<strong>title<\/strong>\u00a0(you can change the title whenever you want), and you can choose the\u00a0<strong>web address<\/strong>\u00a0(it\u2019s not really important what this is, but you cannot change the address later, so keep the address short and simple).<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\">For now,\u00a0<strong>choose any template<\/strong>. I would recommend the\u00a0<strong>Simple template<\/strong>\u00a0for now, and you can experiment with the detailed template options later.<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter jetpack-lazy-image jetpack-lazy-image--handled\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/imgur.com\/VDFlBFB.png?resize=400%2C338\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"338\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-lazy-loaded=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><strong>Step 2. Create a test post<\/strong>. You will see a prompt to go ahead and start posting. Click on that link to \u201cstart posting\u201d or \u201cstart blogging\u201d to add a test post and see how that works. You can always go to Blogger.com to get to your blog dashboard, which is where you will create new posts and edit existing posts.<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><strong>Step 3. Write the test post<\/strong>. The screen for writing a new post has a lot of different features. The key things to notice here are the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\" data-fontsize=\"14\">*\u00a0<strong>Title box\u00a0<\/strong>at top of the screen \u2014 every post needs a title!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\" data-fontsize=\"14\">*\u00a0<strong>Compose<\/strong>\u00a0or HTML option. Compose is what you will use most of the time, but the HTML view can be very handy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\" data-fontsize=\"14\">*\u00a0<strong>Labels<\/strong>\u00a0options to the right \u2014 and labels are VERY important for blog navigation, as you will see in later assignments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\" data-fontsize=\"14\">*\u00a0<strong>Tx<\/strong>\u00a0is the \u201cremove all formatting\u201d function which is really useful if you are cutting and pasting from somewhere else; just highlight anything that has unwanted formatting and use the Tx button to remove the formatting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\" data-fontsize=\"14\">*<strong>\u00a0ABC<\/strong>\u00a0is a spellcheck feature<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter jetpack-lazy-image jetpack-lazy-image--handled\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/imgur.com\/4jvN3BR.png?resize=500%2C83\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"83\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-lazy-loaded=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><strong>Step 4. Publish the test post<\/strong>. Type a title for your post plus a quick message in the post box, just something to test to make sure your blog is working. Try out some of the formatting like\u00a0<strong>bold\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<em>italics<\/em>\u00a0and then highlight the text and use the\u00a0<strong>Tx<\/strong>\u00a0button to remove the formatting. (In your next assignment, you\u2019ll learn about images and other formatting options, labels, etc.) When you are done, click\u00a0<strong>Publish<\/strong>\u00a0to publish your first post.<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\">You will then see the post listing page. On the post listing page, you just need to HOVER over the blank space under the post title to see the options: Edit and View. You can then click on\u00a0<strong>View<\/strong>\u00a0to see your post open in a new browser tab.<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"jetpack-lazy-image jetpack-lazy-image--handled\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/imgur.com\/KxYmVRL.png?resize=200%2C91\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"91\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-lazy-loaded=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\">After you click on view, you should see your post in a new browser tab. Take a look at the URL; the address you see shows what a typical blog post address looks like:<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shaunsclassannouncements.blogspot.com\/2018\/09\/first-day.html\" data-fontsize=\"14\">https:\/\/shaunsclassannouncements.blogspot.com\/2018\/09\/first-day.html<\/a><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\">There are three components in that address:<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><strong>shaunsclassannouncements.blogspot.com<\/strong>\u00a0is the blog homepage address<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><strong>2018\/09<\/strong>\u00a0is the year and month of the post<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shaunsclassannouncements.blogspot.com\/2018\/09\/first-day.html\" data-fontsize=\"14\">first-day.html<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is the title of the post<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\">Because each post has its own specific address, you can link to any post at the blog, as well as linking to a blog\u2019s homepage.\u00a0The contents of the blog homepage change whenever new posts are added, but the address of the homepage is always the same.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=&#8221;PART 3: ADJUST SETTINGS&#8221; open=&#8221;off&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.5&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\">So, now that you have a blog and a blog post, you have just one more task to complete for this assignment:<\/p>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><strong>Step 5. Adjust settings<\/strong>. To adjust your settings, go the blog dashboard at Blogger.com, and click on\u00a0<strong>Settings<\/strong>\u00a0in the left-hand menu (that is also where you will be adjusting the blog design and layout).\u00a0Here are the specific settings you should adjust now:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Posts and comments.\u00a0<\/strong>For \u201cWho can comment?\u201d choose \u201c<strong>Users with Google Accounts<\/strong>\u201d and click\u00a0<strong>Save Settings<\/strong>\u00a0to save this option. In my experience, choosing this option pretty much eliminates any spam on your blog. Since you have limited comments to Google users, you can\u00a0<strong>turn off the word verification.<\/strong>\u00a0Members of the class (who all have Google accounts) will be leaving comments at your blog, and if you turn off the word verification, that will make the commenting process easier for them. If you run into problems with spam, let me know and we can strategize about that!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mobile and email<\/strong>. Make sure you put in a \u201ccomment notification email address\u201d that is an address you check regularly. This can be any address at all; it does not have to be your Gmail address. Use whatever email address you check most often. Don\u2019t forget to click\u00a0<strong>Save Settings<\/strong>\u00a0to save your choice on this page.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Language and formatting<\/strong>. Choose your\u00a0<strong>time zone<\/strong>, and then don\u2019t forget to click\u00a0<strong>Save Settings\u00a0<\/strong>one more time to save your choice on this page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-fontsize=\"14\"><strong>ALL DONE!\u00a0<\/strong>Your blog is up and running, ready to go go go!
