Long live blogging!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Description<\/h2>\n<p>In the early 2000s, the end of the \u201c.com\u201d era saw the rise of \u201cWeb 2.0\u201d as a loosely defined trend in online content generation where everyday users \u2014 not traditional media producers \u2014 created the content that defined digital culture. Blogs more than any other modality came to symbolize the freedom and autonomy made available by new networks and new platforms. In some ways, that role has since been supplanted by social media, but blogging remains an accessible and powerful tool for sharing one\u2019s ideas. In this mission, your challenge is to become a blogger.<\/p>\n<h2>Goals<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>learn about the history of blogging<\/li>\n<li>gain experience working with and customizing blogging platforms<\/li>\n<li>develop a writer \u201cvoice\u201d as a blogger<\/li>\n<li>use analytic tools to measure and grow engagement with an audience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Resources<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Shirky, Clay. Experiment with Platforms<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>create 2-3 accounts on blogging platforms such as wordpress.com, Wix, Weebly, Blogger, or other Blog or CMS platforms<\/li>\n<li>try posting on each platform and reflect on the differences<\/li>\n<li>practice customizing your site through whatever means those platforms make available<\/li>\n<li>invite others (your teammates, for example) to review your blog theme and design and take feedback on what design elements work and which don\u2019t<\/li>\n<li>set up\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/analytics\/\">Google Analytics<\/a>\u00a0and install it in each of your platforms. Use it to learn more about who visits your site and why.<\/li>\n<li>Learn about which platforms have been dominant in the past, and if they\u2019re less popular now, reflect on why that might be?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2. Learn about Blogging Culture<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>When did blogging start? Why?<\/li>\n<li>Who is blogging now? Are there demographic data available, and if so, what does it indicate?<\/li>\n<li>Is there a resonant cultural idea of what \u201ca blogger\u201d is, either on or offline? What kind of person is \u201ca blogger\u201d?<\/li>\n<li>How have blogs, bloggers or blogging factored into US politics?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3.
